BCH celebrates the Innovation Centre’s 10 Year Anniversary
On the 18th October 2010 BCH will be celebrating the 10th Anniversary since their state of the art 1025m² Innovation Centre was built.
Since opening, the Innovation centre has served customers from all over the world. Although the centre has only been built 10 years, BCH has always been at the forefront of innovation since the company was started in 1835. The company was started by 3 gentlemen – William Brierley, Luke Collier and Thomas Hartley. In 1885 they were awarded a silver medal in London and in 1888 a gold medal and diploma in Melbourne at the International Inventions Exhibition. The awards were for a self generating steam pan that revolutionised the confectionery industry by replacing gas fired cooking with steam cooking.
Over the last 10 years the BCH Innovation Centre and the philosophy on which it is based has enabled BCH in partnership with its customers to produce innovative designs and technology for mixing, cooking, cooling, extruding and enrobing food and confectionery products. Some examples of the products developed and tested are cinder toffee, popcorn, 100% fruit bars, chilled soups, 4 colour liquorice, banana fruit bars, Bolognese sauces and many more.
The latest technologies that have been developed in the Innovation Centre are the 100% fruit cooking and extrusion line, the 4 colour liquorice extrusion line, the ProWok for fresh, healthy high quality stir fry production and potato cooking, cooling and extruding for healthy potato snacks.
Within the Innovation Centre we also house a conference facility for customers to meet and discuss trials undertaken with our staff or for training on BCH plant, software and control systems.
The centre is staffed and supported by a wealth of knowledge from food scientists, process engineers, design and mechanical engineers and software developers and it is all managed by a newly appointed facilities manager. The centre has also welcomed students from different universities on placements over the years studying various projects from cryogenic cooling to vacuum cooling technology for cakes.

BCH will be at the PPMA show from the 29th September to the 1st October 2009 on stand E91 in Hall 5 where they will be promoting a wide range of food and confectionery processing equipment solutions.
The focus of the exhibition for BCH will be to present their new innovation ~ the ProWok. The new industrial wok produces fresh, healthy and high quality stir fry foods to a chef quality standard. The patented method used by ProWok solves the problem of vegetables losing their crispness and bite and meat joints retaining their roasted taste using minimal fat or oil content. The ProWok makes it possible to mass produce vegetables of a quality equal to those prepared freshly at home and has a capacity of up to 400kg/hr of raw ingredients, depending on production requirements.

BCH NEW Micro Extrusion Line
BCH launch new new micro confectionery extrusion line is a cost-effective solution for any new start-up companies as well as certain developing markets within the Middle East, Africa and Asia who wish to gain a foothold in the sector, without committing huge initial outlay. The new user-friendly and easy-to-install solution should be of interest to those niche companies serving smaller segments of the confectionery industry. The line presents a viable option as users invariably lack the large sales volumes to warrant investment in larger, more expensive production lines and may also offer advantages to test kitchens environments.
In addition to its ability to extrude traditional confectionery products, the new micro extrusion line has also been designed in tune with the continued move towards more responsible, healthy-eating attitudes. As a result, the new line offers the capability for 100% fruit and vegetable extrusion to suit the latest consumer trends for natural, organic and clean ingredient labels on snack products.
The micro extrusion line has a 300mm product width for output capacities of up to 150kg/hr of liquorice product and up to 300kg/hr of liquorice and sugar paste co-extrusion.
